Our Junior Orchestra is designed to teach basic ensemble skills to those students who are still working to achieve the ability to play all 12 tones that make up western music. Students with a proficiency on the basic first 7 tones (usually D, E, F#, G, A, B & C# are invited to play together and learn how to hold their part, and weave it properly with other students. When students have developed proficiency (usually 2-5 semesters at this level) and have added at least C-natural & F-natural to their finger ability (or low 2 on violin/viola and 2 on cello), most move on to Orchestra.
A typical Jr. Orchestra practice, this Spring 2010 group had 5 violins, 4 cellos (3 are violinists at the orchestra level) and a string bassist (also a violinist, who plays with orchestra). Their April performance was delightful! Another session may improve them to Orchestra level, Summer camp should just about do it!
