After teaching a group violin class for 8 weeks, I asked if anyone was interested in switching to cello, and got not replies. However, when I explained that the Cello player always gets to sit, I had a volunteer quicker than it takes to blink an eye!
Cello has the most soothing sounds in the string instrument family. Many children's programs utilize a soundtrack of cello music in the background. A beautiful instrument that my grandmother tried to interest me in playing, I'm sorry to say that it took me 20 years after her passing to give it a try. I find that I enjoy playing the cello more and more with each passing.
Like other string instruments it has 4 strings and plays in the Tenor range. Many of my violin students spend a summer picking up cello (and learning to read bass clef) to help delight their audiences as they switch instruments during the holiday seasons.
